What are Homeschool Days?

On select dates twice a year, we welcome homeschoolers of all ages to the museum for a self-paced day of learning and fun. In addition to exploring the museum's exhibits, students will embark on a nature walk, experience Chumash storytelling, and enjoy an array of hands-on activities.

Registration

Registration/advanced ticket reservation is highly encouraged but not required. Students and adults must both pay admission. For more information, visit chumashmuseum.org/event-list.

What to Bring

  • Homeschool Days include a guided hike, so be sure to check the weather forecast beforehand and dress accordingly. Wear appropriate footwear, such as sneakers or hiking boots, and remember sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat.

  • Bringing water bottles is highly recommended. However, a drinking fountain is available inside the museum.

  • If staying for lunch, please keep all food and drinks in sealed containers. Food and drinks are NOT allowed in the museum galleries and must be kept in bags at all times. Water bottles, nursing, and bottle feeding are fine.

  • Food and drinks ARE allowed in outdoor areas. Please dispose of all your trash before leaving the museum.

What Will Be Provided

Stations will be available with shared supplies and resources. This includes:

  • pencils and pens

  • crayons and colored pencils

  • worksheets (e.g. coloring pages, word searches, scavenger hunts)

  • guides (e.g. trail guide and ethnobotany booklet)

Please be courteous of how many materials you use and return items after so everyone has the chance to enjoy them (with the exception of worksheets and guides, which may be taken home).

Gallery & Trail Rules

  • Encourage students to be curious. Questions are always welcome!

  • Food and drinks are NOT allowed in the museum galleries and must be kept in bags at all times

  • One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Chaperones must stay with their students throughout their visit.

  • Please do NOT touch any artifacts and replicas in the galleries, unless allowed by a museum staff member.

  • Stay on the trail and don't disturb the wildlife. Leave rocks, vegetation, and artifacts where you find them.

  • Respectful behavior is expected to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all. Inadequate supervision and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.
