CIM Speaker Series Presents: “Native Americans and the West San Fernando Valley Lime Kiln Industry” + Opening of New Exhibit
The limestone processing industry was the first non-agricultural industry in the west San Fernando Valley. Dating from about 1800, the Bell Canyon lime kilns are the oldest extant structures in the valley—even older than the Spanish-founded Mission San Fernando buildings. In this presentation, join archaeologist Al Knight in exploring the west valley lime kiln industry and its operation by the Native/mixed race community until the end of WWI.
