CIM Speaker Series Presents: “The West San Fernando Valley Lime Kiln Industry” + Opening of New Exhibit
The limestone processing industry was the first non-agricultural industry in the west San Fernando Valley. Dating from about 1800, the Bell Canyon lime kilns are the oldest extant structures in the valley—even older than the Spanish-founded Mission San Fernando buildings. In this presentation, join archaeologist Al Knight in exploring the west valley lime kiln industry and its operation by the Native/mixed race community until the end of WWI.
About the Speaker:
With over 40 years of professional experience in archaeological fieldwork and research, Knight has published numerous papers on the ethnography and archaeology of south-central California. His interests include the history, geography, ethnobotany, rock art, and hot springs of California and the Great Basin.
